You have to be specific as in which domain you question belongs. Since you have tagged it under information storage I take it for granted that I can answer it with regard to you home PC. If you use a Windows 7 OS you will have an application called windows media center.
That is a classic example of a content management system. You can can simple store any media on you computer anywhere and the application does the work of organizing, sorting and presenting to you the media. It manages the different types of files, sorts them and presents a unified view to you.
This process of identifying, organizing and presenting information automatically to you is what can be called content management process in very simple terms.
