Let me speak my personal experience. I was a windows user and I tried Linux. Went back to windows because I just couldn't figure my way in the Linux world.
I haven't used mac much but as far as I have used its just the interface - its unix based so we get a taste of unix benchmark performance. But that comes at price - So for me its like buying an old house, paying a fortune just for its paint.
I came back to Linux, I know how to use it now and believe me for the money you spend which is absolutely nothing I get to buy a battle tank. As far as hardware is considered Dell has been offering me a lot of freedom to experiment - no hicups when I try different distros on the hardware, I can throw anything at it and man.. it has a pig's gut.
